Mercedes CLA Advertisement

I hate the filmmaking, I hate the style, I hate the ad. The reason I post this though is the form of advertising video and its prevalence in today’s marketing. While the film is clearly paid for by Mercedes and heavily planned, the jumping narrative and ad-hoc filming style tries to suggest the actor is more of a reporter simply ‘experiencing’ this car he’s been given in the most spontaneous way possible.

I want to mention also, does Mercedes’ client base such that they would respond to a twenty-something skateboarding around the planet alongside their car? I don’t get it. But, still worth a post as this kind of advertising (the kind that approaches a reality porn temperament) is insidiously becoming the center-point of many advertising campaigns.

AF100 Testing

For the next shoot, I’d like to use the Panasonic AF100 camera available. With this camera, I have the option of using a Ninja external recording unit which will allow direct recording to Apple Pro Res codec via HDMI. This will add bulk and slow the shoot down, so this is side-by-side test between internal H.264 (left) and external Pro Res (right) capture methods.

While recording to Pro Res didn’t improve image quality much, it holds up better to grading and the grain appears more filmic (no compression artefacts). Having said this, the improvement to capture is no where near drastic enough to justify shooting to the Ninja.

The lighting in this ad is really nice. I love the use of hair effects lights as the key light and the mixing of justified lighting and introduced lights as kickers.
